Fantasyland Expansion and Other Updates.

I just finished a conference call with the some Pixie agents and  Disney tonight.  Our Disney representative had some interesting news about some big changes going on at Disney World. Some of this has already been reported all over the web, but it's nice to get an official confirmation.  Here's a brief run-down.

Common area in the new health and wellness floor at the Contemporary.

Resorts:

  • The Art of Animation Suites will open in phases, starting in May 2012.
  • You'll be able to book the new health and wellness suites at the Contemporary Resort starting in November. There's not a set opening date, but expect them to be open at Thanksgiving, at the latest.  Rumor has it you can start booking right after July 4.
  • The suites will hold up to six people.
  • Our Rep didn't know the exact prices of the wellness suites, but he said to expect them to start at around $800 per night.
  • There's a very strong rumor that the refurbished rooms at Port Orleans will only sleep four guests because the queen-sized beds won't accomodate a trundle.   I'm trying to get confirmation on this, but it's been hard to get anything solid.

Fantasyland Expansion:

  • The first part of the expansion will open up in the fall of 2012.  This will involve The Little Mermaid attraction as well as Belle's cottage, Gaston's Tavern (quick service) and the Be Our Guest restaurant (table service).
  • The Be Our Guest restaurant is NOT slated to be a character meal at this time.  Update:  Per The Disney Blog, Lumiere will appear on a cart like Remy at Chefs de France in Epcot. There may be photo opportunities as well.
  • The new princess meet and greet will open in Snow White's Scary Adventure in the Fall of 2013. It will be called the Princess Storybook Hall.
  • The Seven Dwarfs Mine Ride, which will be located in the middle of the new Fantasyland expansion, will open in LATE 2013. This will be the last of the major additions to the expansion.
Please check out the latest Fantasyland expansion pictures and a brief update here.

Chris,
I am glad to see the expansion being completed, but do you think the timeline will have any affect on attendance? That some people might delay their trips until after the expansion is complete. Also I was anticipating that all the expansion would be complete in early 2013 rather than Late Fall.

Any idea when Goofy's Barnstormer will be back?

Looking forward to seeing how the new Mine Ride turns out.

John, I've wondered that myself. I've even advised people who only go every few years to wait until at least late 2012. I think Disney is probably betting that's not true though, given all the talk of getting "back to rack" and cutting back on discounts.

Cheryl, I'm not sure. We do know it will be called the Great Goofini and basically be the same design but with a different theme. No word on that, but I would bet later rather than in 2012. The former Toon Town area was always supposed to be last to be finished.

We went to WDW in November 2010 and were hopeful that all the expansion would be done in November 2012, when we are going again. In looking back at the notices that were put out when the expansion first began they implied that they would all be done in
2012. Possibly they are behind schedule.

Am I wrong or were they planning on adding a Pixie Hollow area to the new Fantasyland? Still in the works or have the dumped the idea all together?

Do they have any intention on putting Mickey and Minnie's house back somewhere else? And I don't know why they haven't given the race track a new look. Why don't they change it to be a the new home for Lightning Mqueen? I also think Pixie Hollow should be between Peter Pan's Flight and It's a Small World. Where the stroller parking is, I mean why not? Tink is from Peter Pan!!

Guys, it looks like there will be no Pixie Hollow. That idea was scraped about a year ago when it was decided that the whole expansion was too "girl centric."

As for Mickey and Minnie's house, I'm not sure where it will go. There were some rumors that it would get a new home, either at DHS or at the MK near the front (not sure how credible that is given that there really isn't any room) but at this point, the whole idea of using it elsewhere seems pretty quiet. Too bad, because I personally loved those houses.

As for Goofy's Barnstormer, it will be re-themed as the Great Goofini. Not changing the track, but some of the theming. I know, I'd like to see something new too, but at least they're keeping Goofy.

Does anyone know when the Snow White dark ride will officially close?

Sorry, I haven't heard anything credible on when it will close.
